This is the kind of story I like reading, There are still a lot of good and caring people out there. Our media just can't see them.

Yes...there are lots of good people out there!!!  I'm glad his neighbor decided to step up and do something, instead of just thinking..."he really shouldn't be up there doing that, at his age..." and doing nothing to help!!!

I wish there were more news stories like this instead of ALL the meanness!!!

I truly believe 98% or our population are very good people.  No,  not everyone would volunteer to do roofing (myself included) but on a different level of many aspects.

You are much more optimistic than I am. I would think we are lucky if it's 70 good/30 not so much.

This man was drinking a glass of water at Harties wimpy. It is obvious that he is homeless and by the way he spoke to the waiters I could see that he was a regular. I called over our waiter and asked who the man was and the waiter explained the man stayed in the veld but everyday wimpy management gave him a cup of coffee. I asked the waiter to give the man a burger and chips on our bill and not to tell him who it was from. I kept my eye on the man and he was pleasantly surprised when the food arrived, thanking the waiter and giving him a huge smile ( he even went through his old worn wallet to tip the waiter, who refused the tip). He removed his glasses and prayed over the food, not a 5 second hurried prayer, it took him more than a minute and then he ate.

I realized once again how easily we think God has forsaken us, how quickly we get angry with God if things don't go our way. Here is someone who has lost everything, no matter what the reason, but still thanking and honoring God. Remember what you have, forget what you lack and thank God for the blessings He has bestowed on your live.
Luke 17:11-19

Love it. There are a lot of folks who would not even think about him. Or would somehow rationalize some reason that they shouldn't help.

I'm so glad there are beautiful people in my life.

I wouldn't necessarily say that TM.    Every day, there are stories of mail carriers that go above and beyond, checking on elderly,  rescuing kids, alerting people of fires and so on.  Not all of them make the news.   None of the carriers involve consider themselves heroes and when finished, go about their normal every day lives as if nothing happened, not even mentioning it until it's somehow leaked out.   It's not part of the job, but they do it anyway.   Just as an off duty cop or fireman sees something out of the ordinary and responds to it.   I think when a real emergency occurs, people come together.  Look at 911.   Look at natural disasters.  Sure there are some that will attempt to take advantage, but I think most people will try to help when it's necessary.

I once rescued a guy who was stuck on his roof for over 5 hours.   He went up to fix something and the ladder fell.   No one heard him yelling for help until I got there and was able to put the ladder back up and help him down.   Not a big deal.   When I was done, I continued on my way.    Just something that we were able to do to help out.   Another carrier save a couple of young girls from someone with bad intentions that were bothering them.    He escorted the girls to their home, notified the parents and the police.      All in a day's work.   We've had carriers that have assisted elderly when lost, or that have fallen and taken them back home and helped them until someone came, then went back to the routes.   Just considered it a lunch break.   the way they saw it,  they were there at the right time, someone needed help and they gave it without thinking.   It's what most people would do in a given circumstance.

I copied this from a news website, but I will say this.If I have money in my pocket and see someone in need I will give it all to them. Its a good thing my husbands name is on the deed to the house!
People are running from their country to survive, digging in the ground to find water to survive, eating out of dumpsters and living in the streets in horrible pain and no place to go,elderly people that live around us.Fix an extra portion or two of food and offer it to elderly neighbors. We can look around and find people we can help. That's all we have to do.Look around.

Lindy,  don't think I would give them money, although, I once gave a guy $10 for gas to get his kids home, when he ran out of gas.    I think I would have bought them food instead   My cousin collects blankets, hats and stuff and dirstributes them to homeless in NC.  She has gone in and bought them a meal and brought it to them.   She wont' give them money, but she feels compelled to try to help.

for some strange reaon, the video worked today, yet the other day was telling me there was nothing it could be played on.  Perhaps it had something to do with the site  and the fact it was late at night when I tried?

I believe I've been very blessed, lots of thoughtfulness and kindness has come my way.  Even when I am not alone and my husband with me people reach out.  They open doors holding them so it's easier for me to enter and exit places.  In restaurants, stores, etc. they move aside to make more room and offer their seats.
We have decided if we are out to eat and there is a police officer we will ask the waiter to give us his/her check.  I believe they need some positive recognition these days.  Can't imagine being one with the target they have on their backs or the spouse of one worrying if they will come home after work.
The stress is bad enough being a police officer, but it has just gone up untold notches with the horrible hate speech and threats they are now having to work under.  The people doing this need to be arrested for threatening lives and inciting riots.

I am proud of the volunteers who showed up on that Saturday to help the 80 year aged man
repair his roof TM. Before my stroke, I would like to think I would have shown up to help out.
It's a good feeling to help your neighbors, and to read of others doing the same. Thank you for sharing that story.
